Why choose Malaga for your child's A-levels in Spain?
Malaga offers an exceptional environment that caters perfectly to families and international students seeking a top-notch A-level experience.
Here are some key reasons why Malaga stands out:
Quality of life:
Malaga boasts a high quality of life with a warm Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm summers and mild winters—ideal for outdoor activities all year round. The city’s welcoming community and cosmopolitan atmosphere create a safe and supportive environment for both students and families.
Cultural richness:
Malaga is a cultural hub, home to museums, art galleries, historical sites, and frequent festivals that enrich the educational experience. Additionally, our college organizes cultural trips and events that further enhance the A-level curriculum, providing students with an immersive learning experience.
Transport, connectivity, and independence:
Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport offers excellent connections to major UK cities and international destinations, making travel convenient. The city also boasts an extensive public transport network—buses, local trains, and taxis—that simplifies commuting. In fact, many of our students commute daily from different points across the Malaga province. This daily commute not only offers flexibility in living arrangements but also helps students develop independence and a sense of responsibility as they navigate their way to school.
Quality of education:
Malaga and the Costa del Sol offer many options for international education. Among these, Phoenix College Malaga stands out as a small but exceptional Sixth Form college that has gradually positioned itself as the top choice for many parents and students. Its reputation is built on the high quality of teaching, personalized attention, and an innovative model that provides a clear bridge between secondary school and university.
Affordability and housing
Generally, the cost of living in Malaga is lower than in many parts of Europe, making it an attractive destination for families relocating for A-levels. However, due to Malaga’s international appeal and the influx of foreigners establishing second residences or relocating, rental and property purchase costs have risen significantly in recent years. Still, many families choose to live in neighborhoods near the centre, where children can easily walk or ride a bicycle to school, while others opt for the convenience of public transport such as trains or buses.
Safety and healthcare:
Malaga is renowned for its safety and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for international students. Moreover, Spain’s excellent healthcare system—offering both public and private options—ensures that families have access to high-quality and affordable medical care.
Together, these factors make Malaga not only a vibrant and dynamic place to study A-levels but also an excellent city to live in for the whole family.

Why are our tuition fees for A-levels more affordable compared to other institutions in Spain?
While most international schools are ownwd by large companies, Phoenix College Malaga is owned by teachers who work in the school.
We don’t have to answer to shareholders nor do we have management and administration directors above the co- directors.
Not only does this mean that the college has a familiar personalised atmosphere, it also means that parents’ fees are spent within the school.
So at Phoenix College Málaga, we are committed to academic excellence without unnecessary financial burdens for families. Our focus is on delivering outstanding education rather than maximizing profit.
In summary, here’s why our tuition fees are more affordable compared to other institutions:
✅ An educational project, more than a business – Phoenix College Málaga is driven by a passion for teaching and student success, rather than financial ambition. Our goal is to provide the best British education at a fair price.
✅ No unnecessary luxury facilities, but fully equipped classrooms – Many international schools include sports complexes, swimming pools, and high-end facilities that significantly raise tuition costs. At Phoenix, we prioritize academic performance and small class sizes, ensuring that students receive personalized attention in a focused learning environment.
It is worth mentioning that while we don’t have sports fields or large facilities, we do have a dedicated science laboratory where students can engage in practical experiments in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. We believe in hands-on learning, ensuring that students studying sciences gain real laboratory experience.
With tuition fees significantly lower than those of other British schools in Madrid, Barcelona, or Valencia, Málaga becomes an even more attractive destination for international students. The combination of lower tuition, cost of living, and a fantastic lifestyle makes studying A-Levels here an exceptional opportunity.
What are the university entry options for A-Level students in Spain and internationally?
As A-levels are an internationally recognised qualification, Phoenix College Málaga students can enter universities in the UK, Spain, the USA, and universities all over the world.
UK University Entry
Entry to UK universities is via a central online organisation called UCAS (University and College Admissions Service). Our UCAS Director, Kirsty Ridyard, has over twenty years of experience of guiding students through the process. Since competition for the best universities is intense, students begin preparing during year 12 to ensure that they have plenty of time to produce top quality applications.
Miss Ridyard has helped students get into top universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, University College London, Southampton, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham, Bath, Queen Mary University of London…to study Medicine, Engineering (of various types), Economics, Business Studies, Astrophysics, Fashion Design…
Entry to Spanish Universities – via UNED
The Universidad Nacional de Educacción a Distancia (UNED) validates studies of non-Spanish qualifications. This means that students at Phoenix may use their A level grades to enter Spanish state Universities.
– Up to four A level grades can be used to obtain a score out of 10 depending on the grades achieved.
– A maximum of two PCE (complementary subjects taught in Spanish) subjects can be added to obtain a score out of 14 which gives entry to Spanish Universities. The exams in PCE subjects are taken at the UNED centre in Málaga in May / June of Year 13 and accredited by them.
– At Phoenix College Málaga, we offer classes (subject to demand) or can recommend excellent tutors in six PCE subjects.
Entry to Other Universities
A levels are also valid for entry to all universities where courses are taught in English, and even some where they are taught in other languages. The USA is a popular choice, but our teachers have also helped students enter universities in Australia, Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic amongst others.

In contrast, many other A-Level programs in Spain have larger class sizes, often exceeding 20-25 students per class. This can result in less individualized support and fewer opportunities for direct engagement with teachers.
