About Us
We are a Sixth Form College sited on the Plaza de Uncibay in the centre of the city of Málaga, Spain, which opened in September 2018. We are owned and run by the Co-Directors Kirsty Ridyard, Alex Mitchell and James Riley, three highly experienced A level teachers who have spent many years teaching in the UK and in international schools in Spain. In the Summer of 2023, we expanded into second premises on the same floor of our current building, effectively doubling our size.
What Type of School Are We?
We are a selective, private day-school which teaches British A-levels and International A-levels. Our students join us after completing GCSE (year 11) or 4ª ESO at other schools, in the year that they reach the age of 16. The A-level courses, the UK equivalent to Bacherillato in Spain, give students access to university not just in the UK but also in Spain and the rest of the world. We also offer teaching in complementary PCE (Selectividad) subjects for those students wishing to apply to Spanish universities. All our courses are taught in our school in central Málaga, and we have a fully equipped Science laboratory to carry out all required practical experiments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
What Makes Us Different?
We offer a unique learning experience, focused on students achieving the best that they are capable of. Phoenix College Málaga, as a Sixth Form College, represents a bridge between school and university, so students are given more freedom than they would have in most schools. Between lessons and at breaks, students may leave the college if they wish. There is no school uniform, though appropriate dress is expected. Students are encouraged to take pride in themselves and the College, and contribute through their own initiatives, such as recycling, which is run by the students. And of course, we expect students to work hard and take responsibility for their learning, supported, guided and supervised by us.
What Is Our Student Profile?
Our students come to us from:
- British schools
- Spanish bilingual schools
- Spanish state schools
- Other education systems taught in English
- Other parts of Europe and the world
We carry out a free English Assessment to help students prepare to study in English if they have not done so before. While a high level of fluency in English is important, above all we encourage applications from students with a genuine desire to learn.
The A Level Subjects We Offer At Present Are:
- English
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Spanish
- Spanish for Native students
- Business
- History
- Geography
- Further Mathematics may also run depending upon demand.
- French
We are open to adding other subjects where feasible.
Spanish for beginners may be available subject to demand for an additional cost.
Cambridge Advanced English classes are also available for a supplementary charge. These are highly recommended for those who have not learned in English before. They support and strengthen English use and understanding, normally leading to a B2 / C1 qualification.
PCE (Selectividad) subjects – for those students who need them, we are able to offer (for a supplementary cost) or can recommend private tutors for: Matemáticas Científicas / Física / Química / Biología / Matemáticas Aplicadas / Economía de Empresa.
We are an accredited Edexcel Examinations Centre so our students take all their exams in the school. PCE subject exams are taken at UNED in Málaga in May of year 13.
