An Introduction to Phoenix College Málaga
Who Are We? We are a new Sixth Form College which opened in September 2018. Initially conceived the year before by three highly experienced A level teachers who have spent many years teaching in the UK and in international schools in Spain, the project quickly grew as word spread and local business people invested. The College is owned by a Consortium comprising the three Co-Directors of the College, Kirsty Ridyard, Alex Mitchell and James Riley and five non-teaching partners. The Co-Directors run the school, while our partners, who include lawyers, university staff, bankers and accountants, are responsible for much of the College administration.
What type of School Are We? We are a selective, private day-school which teaches British A-levels and International A-levels. Our students join us after completing GCSE (year 11) or 4ª ESO at other schools, in the year that they reach the age of 16. The A-level courses, the UK equivalent to Bacherillato in Spain, give students access to university not just in the UK but also in Spain and the rest of the world. We also offer teaching in complementary PCE (Selectividad) subjects for those students wishing to apply to Spanish universities. All our courses are taught in our school in central Málaga, and we have a fully equipped Science laboratory to carry out all required practical experiments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
What Makes Us Different? We offer a unique learning experience, focused on students achieving the best that they are capable of. Phoenix College Málaga, as a Sixth Form College, represents a bridge between school and university, so students are given more freedom than they would have in most schools. Between lessons and at breaks, students may leave the college if they wish. There is no school uniform, though appropriate dress is expected. Students are encouraged to take pride in themselves and the College, and contribute through their own initiatives, such as recycling, which is run by the students. And of course, we expect students to work hard and take responsibility for their learning, supported, guided and supervised by us.
What is Our Student Profile? Our students come to us from:
- British schools
- Spanish bilingual schools
- Spanish state schools
- Other education systems taught in English
While a high level of fluency in English is important, above all we encourage applications from students with a genuine desire to learn.
The A Level subjects we offer at present are:
- English
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Spanish
- Business
- History
- Geography

We are an accredited Edexcel Examinations Centre so our students take all their exams in the school. PCE subject exams are taken at UNED in Málaga in May of year 13.
