Kelly has worked in business for over 20 years in companies ranging from start-ups to established multi-nationals. She has performed at Board Level and was an integral part of the senior management teams. Kelly has a passion for Sales and Marketing and in that time has coached, led and developed sales teams to a high degree of success.

Her success was achieved through the intensity of the training in both business and sales that she gave to her teams, helping them to out-perform their own expectations. This led Kelly into taking qualified teaching accreditations enabling her to work with children and pass her knowledge onto students at the foundation of their journeys.

In her spare time Kelly likes to write poetry and spend time with her husband and 4 children exploring the world, so we wanted to ask her some more questions and dig a little deeper into what she loves about teaching:

How did you get into teaching?

I fell into Sales for my main career and worked up the ladder to Sales Director. I loved coaching, training and mentoring my teams. However, I never quite felt complete. So, after many years away from study I decided to take my teachers qualifications to enable me to pass on my knowledge gained from real life business experiences to the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

What do you enjoy most about being a teacher?

One of the main things is seeing the look on the students faces when they finally understand what you are saying. Enabling the students to enjoy education and have fun while learning is critical in underpinning being a successful teacher to me.

Quite often the students teach me something too, there is always one student that will ask a question, that will challenge my knowledge and encourage me to learn more!

What do you enjoy most about Phoenix College?

Phoenix College is unique. It is specialised, focussed and dedicated purely on 6th Form education. All the teachers genuinely care about the students and their development, but not in a harsh or pushy way. The camaraderie between teachers is also great. It truly is a lovely place to work and teach…

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

You can be happy today. Happiness is not something you have to work towards, it is simply a choice!

If you were on a desert island and you could only have three items with you, what would you choose?

A Boat (with sails), to sail wherever I wanted including home. A collection of books to pass the time away. The most practical knife for all situations – survival, food preparation, making things…

What is your ultimate go-to gadget or app?

Photos on my iPhone. Precious moments captured with a click that will last a lifetime.

If you could have dinner with two famous people (dead or alive), who would you choose and why?

The Queen of England… I think she has had a fascinating life where she cannot share her opinion so to listen to it would be intriguing.

The creator of the universe to really know how it all started.

Three words that best describe you:

Resilient, Motivated, Creative
